The collection consists of copies of photographs taken of Miriam Gerstle, her immediate family, and members of her father's family - many of them were the children and grandchildren of Miriam's paternal grandparents, Lewis Gerstle and Hannah Greenebaum. The collection also includes a few copies of photographs taken of family homes in San Rafael and Atherton, California; the artist, Diego Rivera; Yosemite; Lake Tahoe; the White Horse Rapids in Canada; and the construction of the Gatun Locks and the Culebra Cut (later renamed the Gaillard Cut) in the Panama Canal. Some of the photographs were taken by the photographers Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) and Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Some of the photographs contain annotated identification notes and dates.

Miriam Alice Gerstle (1898-1989) was a daughter of William Lewis Gerstle (1868-1947) and Sara Hecht (1874-?) and a paternal grand-daughter of Lewis Gerstle (1824-1902) and Hannah Greenebaum (1838-1930). Miriam was interested in the arts, and she studied in San Francisco at the California School of Fine Arts (later renamed as the San Francisco Art Institute) and the Art Students League in New York City. She later continued her art studies in Paris at Académies Julian and the Grand Chaumière. She began exhibiting in San Francisco in 1915, and she showed her work regularly in both San Francisco and London soon afterwards. From 1920 on, she became a resident of London, England, where, on June 11, 1923, she married the English architect George Grey Wornum (1888-1957). They had three children: Michael, Jenefer, and Brigit. In 1950, McGraw-Hill published her book, "Portrait in the Dark." Jude Fletcher was a descendant of the Wornum family.
